Abstract

The Power-In-Culture Dress was created by a sophomore student in a patternmaking and draping course in Spring 2024. The project's goal was to express the designer’s personal narratives and identity, with a requirement to use Generative AI in the ideation phase. Mentorship guided the student in using Generative AI and applying patternmaking skills to achieve the project’s objectives. The design process included thorough research, design ideation, pattern drafting, creating a sample garment, and constructing the final piece. Inspired by a blend of Vietnamese and American cultures, the dress features elements such as structured brocade sleeves and standing collars, reflecting Vietnamese architecture and traditional attire. The use of Generative AI enabled the exploration of ambitious, classy, and traditional design concepts, leading to unique elements like power sleeves and intricate draping. The garment emphasizes sustainability, meticulous craftsmanship, and cultural representation, promoting a deeper appreciation for cultural diversity in fashion.
