Snapshots: Six Curatorial Concepts
Abstract
Recent curatorial practice has emphasized education in exhibition development, installation, and interpretation. Yet, curatorial processes can also be deployed as a pedagogical tool for critical and creative thinking. This is reflected in the exhibition “Snapshots: Six Curatorial Concepts,” which was installed in a university apparel and textile museum. "Snapshots" was the outcome of a formative assessment in a graduate-level course about museum practice. The associated project invited each student to develop a hypothetical exhibition with an object list of five to ten pieces drawn from any museum database. Two of these pieces were required to be from the host museum’s permanent collection. These objects were then mounted and installed in the museum as a representation, or “snapshot,” of the full exhibition concept developed by each student. In this sense, "Snapshots" was a multivocal collection of six “mini” exhibitions, which were directed by student learning, exchange, and collaborative support.
