What are the Challenges and Benefits of Engaging in a User-Centered Design Approach for Apparel Product Development Students in a Senior Capstone Course?
Abstract
This research explores the integration of User-Centered Design (UCD) in an apparel design course, focusing on senior students’ perceptions and experiences with inclusive design for diverse user groups. Utilizing Project-Based Learning (PBL), the study examines how UCD practices enhance students' preparation for careers in the fashion industry by fostering a deeper understanding of user needs and encouraging innovative design solutions. Through semi-structured interviews with six apparel product development students, the study identifies key benefits and challenges faced during the design process. Findings reveal that UCD improves design skills and understanding of user psychology and presents challenges in fully meeting user needs and maintaining creativity. This research contributes to filling the literature gap on UCD application in apparel design education, offering insights into preparing students for the complexities of the modern apparel industry.
