Cloth Face Mask Fit and Function for Children: Sizing and Fit Analysis

Authors: , , , , ,

Abstract

This study examined the sizing and fit of a prototype face mask designed for children 6 years old by using 3D body scan models and face mask simulations. The key facial measurements were evaluated to suggest a size chart for children 6 years old. The analysis of the measurement data was applied to optimize the size and fit of a new mask design. Then, we evaluated the fit of our prototype face mask design on 44 head scans subjectively and objectively. Study findings suggest that width-related measurements are critical for developing an effective sizing strategy for children’s face masks. Additionally, BMI was found to be the main factor for identifying size ranges. Our findings also highlighted that 22.07 mm, and 12.65 mm gaps between the face and the mask at the mouth and nose levels can provide an acceptable fit that would allow snug fit and comfort.
