Abstract

We examined a corpus of research publications on textiles that spanned 153 years and over 65,000 documents from Microsoft Academic. A VOS viewer map of 200 journals that publish textile research revealed the field’s interdisciplinary structure. It includes journals on textile chemistry and engineering, fundamental and general textiles research, smart textiles, advanced textiles and composites, and sustainability. An average publication year was calculated for textile-related documents from each journal we mapped. Textile Research Journal was one of the oldest continuously publishing periodicals: The average publication year of its 1,420textile-related articles was 1988. A normalized citations overlay compared journals on how often, on average, their textile research was cited. Textile Research Journal publications were cited less, on average, than journals focused on advanced materials and chemistry, such as Chemical Engineering Journal or Nano Technology, reflecting innovations and advancements in textile applications and the shift to specialized and newly established journals.
