A Study on the Historical Research Characteristics of Fabric Material for the Concubines’ Costume in Yeonsan’s Reign

Abstract

This study is aimed to analyze and present the essential characteristics for concubine’s costume in the period of Yeonsan(the 10th king of Joseon dynasty) for correct reapperence. the scope of the study is from 1502 to 1506, because Yeonsan’s most beloved concubine had the highest authority in this period. The first characteristic is delicate ‘mangeumseon [fabric filled with golden pattern fully]’. The second characteristic is ‘thin interwoven fabric and silk gauze’ made with flower patterns. The third characteristic is the ‘dyeing of deep vivid color’ with Korean dye. The fourth characteristic is ‘fur material’ for luxury winter clothes. The fabric culture pursued by Yeonsan had the advantage of establishing an aesthetically costume culture with domestic techniques although it was decadence. The characteristics of the fabric of Yeonsan’s reign must be reflected in the his concubine’s costume.
