Abstract

The traditional historic costume class covers historical, sociological, cultural, and costume content from 3000 BCE to the early 2000’s. Faculty must strategically decide which topics to pursue. Processing Fluency Theory posits that experiential activities that speak to a student’s learning style can enhance learning. To that end, two strategies are employed: an assignment menu containing a variety of assignments, from which students select four to complete, and chapter quizzes in lieu of traditional exams. This enables students to choose assignments that work with their schedule and interests, and allow them to engage more strongly with focused content.
