Abstract

Commes des Garcons Fall 2019 Ready-to-Wear collection on darkness and Kawakubo’s fears of the modern world, we developed a functional activewear collection. Although the collection is visually appealing and the fears and inspiration, it is difficult to imagine any of the looks being worn off the runway. To reimagine the collection in a more practical sense, we created an inspired activewear. Using similar mixed media elements such as layering, mesh, and structure, we created an edgy, dynamic look that can be worn to, from, in, or outside of the gym. The name of the piece comes from the anatomy of a shadow. The umbra is the dark, inner region of a shadow and the penumbra is the partially shaded outer region. By referencing both of these components, our title encapsulates the duality of darkness and light, and the curious, intermediate area between the two.

Keywords: ready-to-wear, functional clothing, surface design
