Reflections on Crafting a Journal Issue on "Racism and Discrimination in the Marketplace"

Author
  • Samantha Cross (Iowa State University)

Abstract

In the summer of 2020, three marketing academics committed to be the guest editors of a special issue on "Racism and Discrimination in the Marketplace" for the Journal of the Association of Consumer Research (JACR), the premier consumer research association in the field. As one of the editors of the forthcoming issue (and an author of one of the selected papers), Dr. Samantha Cross will share her reflections on crafting a special journal issue on a still under-researched topic in the marketing academy. This session will highlight how to craft an issue that is both inclusive and welcoming to new scholars interested in this type of research, while honoring seminal scholars who persisted with research on these topics, even as their work was often discounted as less rigorous and less scholarly areas of research. This session will not only provide an overview of the challenges and rewards in being a guest editor for a special issue during a global pandemic, but audience members will also leave understanding the additional promotional efforts and author guidance undertaken in compiling a body of work on the topic of racism and discrimination.
